Thirty minutes later, Mason pulled up outside a large sporting goods store.

Nicole had been quiet for a large part of the afternoon.

He was about to make her even more uncomfortable. As they headed inside, he dropped his next plan. “I think you should stay at my place tonight.”

She jerked her gaze to his, her eyes wide. “Why?”

“So you can spend as much time with Cotton as possible before tomorrow.”

“I know her pretty well now. I think I’m good.”

“It’s not you I’m worried about,” he added as she opened the door. He followed close behind her, grabbing the door as they entered. “She doesn’t know you either. I’m afraid she might not obey you at the park or come when you call.”

Nicole took a deep breath as she led him to the women’s clothing section, mumbling under her breath.

He wasn’t surprised. He also hoped she didn’t have to spend days on end at the park. It was a longshot in the first place. There was every chance she could go there two weeks in a row and never find the guy. Meanwhile, it was also possible their perp might pick up another woman right under their noses.

Not to mention they had no idea what characteristics the perp found attractive in a woman. Perhaps he wouldn’t even glance twice at Nicole. Though Mason couldn’t imagine any man on earth not doing a double take when they saw her.

Mason considered the fact that sometimes a perp actually gravitates to women he doesn’t like. Especially killers. They often grab women who look like their mom or their ex-wife or someone they have an aversion to. But that seemed unlikely in this case since the two victims hadn’t looked similar in terms of coloring or hair or eyes. Chances were the killer had found them both attractive because of their build and the way they dressed—the two things they did have in common. It was sheer luck Nicole fit the mold.

Nicole grabbed several things from the racks, disappeared into a fitting room, and returned five minutes later making a beeline for the check out.

“We’re done?” he asked as he trailed behind her.

“Yep. Unless you wanted to head to the fishing aisle or something,” she joked, smiling at him over her shoulder.

He couldn’t see what she was holding in her hand, but he was shocked at how quickly she had made a selection. No way in hell was he going to make some snide comment about how long it took women to shop. She might pull her weapon on him.

Speaking of weapons…

He waited until she had paid and they were back in the car to address his next concern. “How are you going to carry a weapon at the dog park?”

“I’m not.” She buckled her seat belt and then faced him. “I’ll be counting on you to watch my back just like you did at the club,” she half teased. “Besides, he didn’t take anyone from the park. That’s not his MO. I need to find him and get a date with him.
